Washing Symbols

The washtub symbol tells you how to wash the garment. Dots inside indicate temperature. Lines underneath indicate agitation level.

🫧
Normal Wash
Machine wash at any temperature on normal cycle.
🫧
Wash 30°C (Cold)
Machine wash cold (one dot = 30°C / 86°F). Use for delicates and dark colors.
🫧
Wash 40°C (Warm)
Machine wash warm (two dots = 40°C / 104°F). Standard for most cottons and polyester.
🫧
Wash 60°C (Hot)
Machine wash hot (three dots = 60°C / 140°F). Towels, sheets, and white cotton.
Hand Wash Only
Wash by hand in cool water. Do not machine wash. Common on silk, cashmere, and wool.
🚫
Do Not Wash
Do not wash with water. Take to a dry cleaner.
〰️
Gentle / Delicate Cycle
One line under the washtub = permanent press (medium agitation). Two lines = gentle/delicate cycle (low agitation).
Bleach Allowed
Any bleach may be used when needed.
Non-Chlorine Bleach Only
Triangle with diagonal lines = only oxygen-based bleach (like OxiClean). No chlorine bleach.
🚫
Do Not Bleach
Triangle with X = no bleach of any kind. Will damage the fabric or color.
Tumble Dry Normal
Square with circle = tumble dry. No dots = any heat setting.
Tumble Dry Low
One dot in circle = low heat. For synthetics, knits, and items prone to shrinking.
Tumble Dry Medium
Two dots in circle = medium heat. Standard for most cotton and poly-blend items.
Tumble Dry High
Three dots in circle = high heat. Towels, heavy cotton, sturdy fabrics only.
🚫
Do Not Tumble Dry
Square with circle and X = do not tumble dry. Air dry only.
Dry Flat
Square with horizontal line = lay flat to dry. Essential for knits and cashmere (prevents stretching).
📐
Line Dry / Hang to Dry
Square with vertical line = hang on a line or hanger to dry.
🔥
Iron Low
One dot = low heat (110°C / 230°F). For silk, acetate, and synthetics. Use a pressing cloth.
🔥
Iron Medium
Two dots = medium heat (150°C / 300°F). For wool, polyester blends, and rayon.
🔥
Iron High
Three dots = high heat (200°C / 390°F). For cotton and linen. Can use steam.
🚫
Do Not Iron
Iron with X = do not iron. Heat will damage the fabric (common on sequined, printed, or plastic-coated items).
💨
No Steam
Iron with lines crossed out = iron without steam. Steam can water-mark certain fabrics.
Dry Clean Only
Empty circle = professional dry clean only. Take it to a cleaner.
🅿️
Dry Clean - Any Solvent
P in circle = dry clean with any solvent except trichloroethylene.
🇫
Dry Clean - Petroleum Only
F in circle = dry clean with petroleum-based solvent only. More gentle process.
🚫
Do Not Dry Clean

Quick Reference: The 5 Symbol Shapes

Every laundry symbol is based on one of five shapes. Once you know the shapes, you can decode any label:

💡 The Five Shapes

Washtub (bucket shape) = Washing instructions
Triangle = Bleaching instructions
Square = Drying instructions
Iron shape = Ironing instructions
Circle = Dry cleaning instructions

An X through any symbol means "do not" do that thing. Dots inside a symbol indicate temperature (more dots = higher heat). Lines under a symbol mean "be gentler" (more lines = more gentle).

Frequently Asked Questions

Dots indicate temperature. One dot means low/cool. Two dots mean medium/warm. Three dots mean high/hot. This applies to washing (water temperature), drying (heat setting), and ironing (iron temperature). More dots always means more heat.

Lines underneath the washtub indicate the gentleness of the wash cycle. No line means normal cycle. One line means permanent press (medium agitation, reduced spin). Two lines mean gentle or delicate cycle (low agitation, low spin). More lines = treat more gently.

Most countries use the ASTM International (formerly ISO 3758) standard, which is the system shown on this page. The United States, Canada, Japan, and most of Europe use this system. However, you may occasionally see older or non-standard symbols on some garments. When in doubt, err on the side of gentler treatment: cooler water, lower heat, and air drying.

If you know the fabric content (check the other label for material composition), you can use general guidelines: cotton and linen tolerate heat; synthetics prefer low heat; silk and wool need cool water and gentle handling; cashmere should be hand washed. When in doubt, wash cold on gentle and air dry. This is the safest default for any fabric.

Laundry symbols based on the ASTM D5489 standard for care labeling of textile products, which aligns with the international ISO 3758 standard. The five base symbols (wash, bleach, dry, iron, professional care) and their modifier system (dots for temperature, bars for gentleness, X for prohibition) are standardized across the textile industry.
