How to Clean Air Fryer
What You'll Need
- Several drops
- 1 tbsp (if needed)
- 1
- 1
- Sink basin
Step-by-Step Method
Unplug the air fryer and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Never clean a hot air fryer.
Pull out the basket and drip pan. Wash both in warm soapy water with a non-scratch sponge. Most baskets have a non-stick coating, so avoid abrasive scrubbers.
Wipe the inside of the air fryer unit with a damp cloth. Check the heating element at the top for food splatter. If there is buildup on the heating element, let the unit cool completely and gently clean with a soft brush.
For stubborn residue on the basket, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the affected areas, let sit 10 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-scratch sponge.
Dry all parts completely with a clean cloth or let air dry. Reassemble when fully dry. Moisture left in the unit causes steam during the next use.
- Never use metal utensils or steel wool on the basket (scratches the non-stick coating)
- Never submerge the main air fryer unit in water (it has electrical components)
- Do not put the basket in the dishwasher unless the manufacturer specifically says it is dishwasher-safe (many non-stick coatings degrade in dishwashers)
- Line the basket with perforated parchment paper for easy cleanup. Make sure the paper does not cover the entire basket bottom or it blocks airflow.
- Run the air fryer empty at 400°F for 3 minutes after cleaning to burn off any remaining moisture or residue.
- If your air fryer smells like old food, the heating element likely has grease buildup. Clean it with a soft brush.
Frequently Asked Questions
Check your specific model's manual. Some baskets are dishwasher-safe on the top rack, but many non-stick coatings degrade faster with dishwasher detergent. Hand washing with a soft sponge extends the non-stick coating life significantly.
Two common causes: grease buildup on the heating element (clean it), or excess oil in the food dripping onto the hot element. A small amount of water in the drip pan under the basket catches grease and reduces smoke.
