Step-by-Step Method
Look for a tag on the couch (usually under a cushion). W = water-based cleaning okay. S = solvent-based only (use dry cleaning solvent). WS = either method works. X = vacuum only, no liquids.
Remove all cushions. Vacuum every surface: cushion tops, bottoms, sides, the frame, crevices, and under cushions. Use the crevice tool for seams and corners.
Sprinkle baking soda over all fabric surfaces. Let sit 20-30 minutes. Vacuum thoroughly. This removes odors embedded in the fabric.
Mix 1 tsp dish soap, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and 1 cup warm water in a spray bottle. Spray stains lightly. Blot with a clean white cloth from the outside in. Do not soak the fabric.
Dampen a clean cloth with plain water and blot the cleaned areas to remove soap residue. Blot dry with a fresh cloth. Open windows or run a fan to speed drying.
- Do not saturate the fabric with water (moisture trapped in cushion foam causes mold)
- Do not use bleach on colored upholstery
- Do not skip the care tag check (wrong cleaning method can ruin fabric)
- Do not rub stains (pushes them deeper)
- Fabric protector spray (like Scotchgard) applied after cleaning creates a barrier that repels future stains.
- Flip and rotate cushions monthly to distribute wear evenly.
- For pet hair: a rubber glove swiped across the fabric lifts hair that vacuuming misses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enzyme-based cleaners (like Nature's Miracle) break down the proteins in pet urine that cause lingering odor. Spray, let sit per product directions, blot dry. Baking soda alone masks the smell temporarily but does not break down the odor-causing compounds.
Sources & Methodology
Upholstery care code system (W, S, WS, X) is an industry standard from the Joint Industry Fabric Standards Committee. Enzyme cleaners for pet odors use protease and lipase enzymes to break down uric acid crystals.
