Step-by-Step Method
Remove the stainless steel inner pot. Wash with dish soap and warm water. For stuck-on food: soak for 10 minutes, then scrub with a non-abrasive sponge.
Remove the silicone sealing ring from the lid. Wash with hot soapy water. For odor absorption: soak in a vinegar-water solution for 30 minutes.
Wash the entire lid with soapy water. Remove the anti-block shield (the small metal cap inside the lid). Check that the float valve moves freely. Clean the steam release valve and gasket.
NEVER submerge the base unit in water (it has electrical components). Wipe the outside and heating element area with a damp cloth. Dry thoroughly.
Run a steam cycle with 1 cup water + 1 cup white vinegar + 1 tbsp baking soda. Steam for 2 minutes, natural release. This cleans the internal steam channels.
- NEVER submerge or put the base unit in water
- Do not put the lid or sealing ring in the dishwasher unless the manual specifically says it is safe
- Do not forget to clean the anti-block shield and float valve (food residue prevents proper sealing)
- The sealing ring should be replaced every 12-18 months. Old rings lose elasticity and cannot seal properly.
- If the 'Burn' warning appears frequently, the bottom of the inner pot may have residue that prevents even heat distribution. Deep clean the pot exterior.
- Store the Instant Pot with the lid upside-down on top (not locked). This allows the sealing ring to air out and reduces odor absorption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Silicone absorbs food odors, especially from strong-smelling dishes like curry, chili, and garlic bread. Soak the ring in vinegar-water solution for 30 minutes, or place it in direct sunlight for a few hours (UV breaks down odor compounds). Some users buy color-coded backup rings for different food types.
Sources & Methodology
Instant Pot cleaning per manufacturer care guidelines. Silicone odor absorption is inherent to the material and managed through cleaning, not eliminated.
