How to Clean Windows
For second-story or higher windows: use an extension pole with a squeegee attachment, or hire a professional. Do not lean out of windows or stand on chairs/stools on upper floors.

Step-by-Step Method
Add 1 teaspoon of dish soap to a gallon of water. That is all you need. More soap creates more streaks.
Dip the strip washer or sponge in the solution. Scrub the entire window surface, paying attention to corners and edges where dirt accumulates. Do not worry about excess water.
Starting at the top left corner, pull the squeegee horizontally across the glass in a straight line. Wipe the squeegee blade with a cloth after each pass. Overlap each pass slightly so no unwiped strips remain.
Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe any water from the window edges and the sill. Wipe any drips from the frame.
- Do not clean windows in direct sunlight (solution dries before you squeegee, leaving streaks)
- Do not use paper towels (they leave lint and can scratch)
- Do not use newspaper (the ink transfer trick is outdated; modern newspaper ink does not work the same)
- Do not use too much soap (causes streaking)
- Clean windows on an overcast day. Direct sunlight dries the solution before you can squeegee it off, causing streaks.
- A new squeegee rubber blade makes a huge difference. Replace the rubber strip every 6 months for professional results.
- For hard water spots on exterior windows: apply white vinegar with a sponge, let sit 5 minutes, then clean as normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Three things: too much soap in the solution, cleaning in direct sunlight (solution dries before squeegeeing), or a worn/dirty squeegee blade. Use minimal soap, clean on overcast days, and keep the squeegee blade clean and sharp.
Monthly for the best appearance. Every 2-3 months is acceptable for most homes. Clean more frequently if you live near the coast (salt spray), near construction, or in a high-pollen area.
