How to Remove Mold from Washing Machine (Gasket Mold)
If mold has penetrated behind the gasket or into areas you cannot reach, the gasket may need professional replacement. Some front-loader gaskets cost $50-150 to replace.

Step-by-Step Method
Put on gloves. Pull back the rubber door gasket folds. Spray hydrogen peroxide directly on all visible mold. Let sit 10 minutes. Scrub the gasket folds with a toothbrush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Add 2 cups white vinegar to the detergent dispenser. Run the hottest, longest cycle with no clothes. This kills mold and dissolves residue inside the drum, hoses, and pump.
Add 1/2 cup baking soda directly to the drum. Run another hot cycle. This neutralizes remaining odor and loosens any final residue.
Remove detergent and fabric softener dispensers. Soak in hot water, scrub mold with a toothbrush, rinse and replace.
Leave the door ajar after every wash. Use HE detergent only. Do not use more detergent than directed. Wipe the gasket after every load.
- Do not use bleach and vinegar in the same cycle
- Do not leave wet clothes in the washer for more than a few hours
- Do not close the door between loads (traps moisture)
- This problem is almost exclusively a front-loader issue. Top-loaders dry out more easily.
- Many front-loaders have a 'tub clean' or 'self-clean' cycle. Use it monthly.
- Switch to powdered detergent or detergent pods to reduce residue buildup.
Frequently Asked Questions
The door gasket creates a sealed environment that traps moisture between loads. Combined with detergent residue and warm temperatures, it is an ideal mold habitat. The design trade-off of front-loaders (better cleaning, less water) comes with this maintenance requirement. Leaving the door ajar and monthly cleaning cycles prevents it.
Sources & Methodology
Front-loader gasket mold is the most common maintenance issue reported in consumer appliance surveys. Prevention methods per major manufacturer guidelines (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool).
