How to Remove Grease / Oil from Clothes
Removal Method
1
Blot excess grease with a paper towel. Do not rub.
2
Cover the stain with cornstarch or baby powder. Press it in. Let sit 15-30 minutes to absorb the oil.
3
Brush off the powder. Apply dish soap (Dawn works best) directly to the stain. Work it in with your fingers.
4
Let the dish soap sit for 10 minutes.
5
Wash in the warmest water safe for the fabric. Check the stain before drying.
💡 Alternative Method
WD-40 sprayed on the stain, let sit 15 minutes, then wash with dish soap and hot water. Sounds counterintuitive, but oil dissolves oil.
🚫 What NOT to Do
- Do not put in the dryer until the stain is gone (heat sets grease permanently)
- Do not use cold water for grease (grease solidifies in cold water)
🔄 If Nothing Works
Dry cleaning for delicate fabrics. For sturdy fabrics, try a second round of dish soap + hot water soak.
