How to Remove Pet Urine from Carpet

Difficulty Hard
Urgency Act fast!
⏱️ Time-Sensitive Stain

This stain sets quickly. Start treatment as soon as possible for the best results. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to remove completely.

Removal Method

1

Blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels. Stand on the towels for maximum absorption. Replace towels and repeat until no more moisture transfers.

5 min
2

Apply an enzyme-based pet cleaner (like Nature's Miracle or Rocco & Roxie) generously to the stain. The enzymes must SOAK through the carpet to the padding underneath. Follow the product's dwell time (usually 10-15 minutes).

3

Blot up excess cleaner. Do not rinse enzyme cleaners (they continue working as they dry).

5 min
4

Cover with a clean cloth weighted down by a heavy object. Let air dry completely (24-48 hours).

💡 Alternative Method

DIY enzyme alternative: 1 cup hydrogen peroxide + 1 tsp dish soap + 2 tbsp baking soda. Apply, let sit 15 minutes, blot. Not as effective as commercial enzyme cleaners but works in a pinch.

🚫 What NOT to Do
  • NEVER use ammonia-based cleaners on urine (urine contains ammonia compounds and the smell reinforces the pet's instinct to mark the same spot)
  • Do not use a steam cleaner on urine before enzyme treatment (heat sets the protein and locks in the odor)
  • Do not just mask with baking soda (the uric acid crystals remain and the smell returns when humidity rises)
🔄 If Nothing Works

Professional carpet cleaning with enzyme treatment. For repeated marking in the same spot, the carpet pad may need replacement as urine soaks through carpet into padding.
